Liedtext

Der Liedtext bleibt im gesungenen Englisch.

Lift the pruning blades from ash, The billhooks from the rain; Wrap the handles scorched by fire, Hammer every bent edge straight. I found the bowl my household carved Split black beside the wall; I called the names into the smoke And heard no answer fall.

We warned them what the oil would do. We watched the searchers come. No roof will wait without a hand; No hedge will stand there dumb.

Every hedge has teeth. Every gate can close. Every hand that lifts a blade Makes one more shelter hold. Let the riders learn the ground; Let the searchlight meet the leaves. No home waits helpless now— Every hedge has teeth.

At the burned-out orchard edge, We teach the narrow ground: Where a horse must lose its speed, Where wheels cannot turn round.

Take the little route bells down; Retie the reeds within. The wider paths need know no more Than where our watch begins. We name the steel the Briar Knives; We name the grief that binds. What scattered us beneath the flame Will not divide us twice.

Every hedge has teeth. Every gate can close. Every hand that lifts a blade Makes one more shelter hold. Let the riders learn the ground; Let the searchlight meet the leaves. No home waits helpless now— Every hedge has teeth.

Here the sleepless take a watch. Here the shaking hands grow still. Here the ones who carried nothing Carry purpose up the hill. We are more than burned-out rafters; Stand beside us, take the signal, See the fear change sides tonight.

No high chair and no bright banner, Only tasks that must be done; Only one mark on the roadway, Only one voice when we run.

Pin the copied convoy hours Beneath the orchard blade; Count the escort, count the wagons, Mark the bend beyond the lake. Some say food lies under canvas, Some say healers ride inside; The seal still feeds the occupation— Do not let the count divide us.

Scouts go out before the question Reaches every open door; What the valley has not answered Will be answered on the road; We have paid in ash for warning. We will choose who bears the cost.

Turn the old knot inward. Leave the bell behind. When the marked hand gives the signal, Move as one and do not ask.

One road. One target. One command beneath the leaves.

Every hedge has teeth. Every path obeys. Every hand that lifts a blade Strikes where the marker says. Let the whole road learn our name; Let no question slow our feet. No home waits helpless now— Every hedge has teeth.

The scouts depart before first light; The whetstone pulse runs on. One backward reed knot holds the rain Where an older path has gone.

A quiet hand unties the sign And follows what we hid.
