The Greenfold

The fertile heart of Myrvand, a valley of orchards, hidden paths and Hearthkin villages that no king has ever managed to rule.

The Greenfold is the fertile central basin of Myrvand: orchards and grazing hills, clear rivers, beechwoods, standing stones and hundreds of small Hearthkin communities. It has no capital and no border guard. It is held together by hospitality, memory and paths shared between neighbors, and no king has ever successfully taxed the whole of it.

Where it lies

The basin sits between the forest of Eilvaran in the west, the approaches to the Blackspine in the east, the roads toward Skeldheim in the north and the Reed Marches in the south. Its edges are watersheds and friendships more than surveyed lines.

A map that lives in people

Travel in the Greenfold depends on being known, or on being introduced. Reed knots, small bells, bowls set at open doors and paths visible only in rain form a map that no archive possesses. A path may be open for a market day and gone after danger. Signs turn, markers wander and hedges are allowed to swallow unused roads. The valley is not trackless; its routes simply belong to the people who agree to share them.

Places worth knowing

  • Brindle Hollow: the market village outsiders are permitted to find.
  • The Walking Orchard: fruit trees replanted across generations, said to move by night.
  • Rootmere: a lake beside the oldest known Rootwalker.
  • The Quiet Road: an old imperial road left to overgrow after three invasions.
  • Honey Houses: bee-marked clinics and refuges where rank and quarrels wait outside while someone remains a patient.
  • Willowmere: a village of willows and warm windows.

Where the Greenfold meets old forest, travelers sometimes glimpse Eida, the First Hart, or feel the slow attention of Avarr, the Deep Root.
