Aethra Above

The lost homeland of the Aethyr, somewhere beyond the Aurora Veil, which no mortal chart has ever placed at any distance from Myrvand.

On a clear winter night in the north the aurora hangs low and green, and an Aethyr stands beside you looking up at it the way one looks at a locked door. Ask her how she came down from Aethra and she will tell you. Ask another, and the road is a different road. One remembers climbing. One remembers falling. One remembers a gate that stood open onto nothing at all. What the witnesses share would fit in a cupped hand: stars that hang where no stars should, and the halls of the Orders of Purpose, where every craft answered to another. The builder answered to the keeper of living things, the commander to the law, the gate-maker to the healer, the prophet to the dissenter. Then the sun went quiet. The damaged records say that much, and then they fail. Somewhere above the light, or behind it, a choir stands empty. Nobody can point to it. Everyone looks.

What the witnesses say

Aethra Above is the world, or realm, from which the Aethyr descended. Whether "above" means the stars, another layer of being, a rank, or only a rough rendering of the Aethyr's gate-language, nobody can say. On maps it is only a small inset, tied to the Aurora Veil and to the lost route called the Last Gate.

The surviving accounts describe a civilization built on obligation, where no craft, command or prophecy was allowed to stand alone. The Aethyr who came down kept many of those old offices but lost the bonds between them. Their quarrelling factions today look like pieces of one broken structure, each trying to act as the whole.

What is told

Three phrases survive in damaged records. The Quiet Sun was an emergency in which light, heat, or everything that depended on them failed. The Empty Choir may name a disaster, an institution, a lost people, or a severed resonance. The Ninth Calculation was the reckoning that justified coming to Myrvand at all, and no one can prove whether it was right. The crossing began the Age of Falling Light; the cooperation that followed built the Age of Bright Works, then broke apart in argument. Now the Returning Path wants to reopen the way home, the Crown of Ash calls that a danger to existence itself, and the Root and Tide Wardens fear both an empire that never leaves and a departure that ends in catastrophe. Whether Aethra still exists as it is remembered, no one knows.
