The White Beyond

The polar edge of Myrvand north of Skeldheim, a realm of blue ice, singing crevasses and auroras bright enough to cast shadows, where the maps stop.

Past the last winter grazing, the land stops pretending to be a country. The glacier valleys open onto plains of blue ice that run to the end of sight, and the wind has nothing left to push against. Somewhere a crevasse is singing, a thin high note under the ice, and the guides fall quiet when they hear it, because it means a storm. Overhead the aurora moves, so bright that it throws your shadow across the snow. Far off, a long black scar breaks the white where something once fell burning from the sky.

Nobody here speaks of miles. They speak of fuel, of wind, of how many safe places to sleep lie between here and there: a lava tube, an old ice cave, a hollow some hermit used and left. Behind you, your own tracks are already filling. In a few minutes the snow will have taken them, and the White will look as though no one has ever come this way.

What a traveller finds

The White Beyond begins north of Skeldheim, beyond the last winter grazing valleys and the high passes. Its border is drawn by the weather, not by any lord. In a hard year the White pushes south into inhabited fjords; in a mild one, hunters follow the ice north for weeks. Along its western margin the Whale-Road Sea freezes when it pleases.

No kingdom has ever held this land. Hunters, hermits, omen-readers and lost expeditions shelter in lava tubes and old ice caves, and white bears and ice spirits share the cold with them. There are months when daylight will not end, and months when darkness will not. Skeldr maps usually stop here, not because the land ends but because dependable routes do, and the local guides distrust anyone who wants to turn their survival paths into strategic maps.

What is told

Skeldr sagas keep the memory of several journeys into the far north, and they still argue over which were voyages, which were visions and which were death-songs. Under retreating ice, older camps have been found with tools that match no people anyone knows. In recent years the cold has been reaching farther south than expected: sea ice turns treacherous, and the old weather signs fail. Skeldr seers speak of a White Silence moving out of the north. Crown scouts, seers and the watchers of the sky-folk all want to understand what is happening up here. None of them has yet proved a single cause.
