Sael, Keeper of Unchosen Paths

The Veyndra power of possibility and dream, who hid part of the future where no prophet or god could read it.

Sael is the Veyndra power of possibility, dream, chance and divergence: every future that could be, but is not yet. No two accounts agree on Sael's face. Hair, voice, age and gender shift at the edge of attention, and only an unfinished cloak and an unwoven golden thread recur. The old wanderer called the First Witness says this is not a disagreement at all: "You remember the one who might have met you."

The gift of more

Sael gave creation more outcomes than its makers could count. That was the beginning of real choice, and also of accident, regret, missed chances and hope. Prophecy exists because patterns can be read. Freedom exists, the fragments say, because Sael made sure the reading is never complete.

Among the makers

Auvra, Mother of Measure found Sael both necessary and unbearable. Sael opened doors inside her laws, and Auvra made every chosen door carry its consequences. Kharun delighted in Sael's surprises, but resented the paths in which the First Flame was never lit. Varka, the Name-Eater offered Sael an infinity of unreal worlds in exchange for the one real world. Sael refused, because an unchosen path is precious only if choosing matters.

The Hiding of Perhaps

In the War of the First Dawn, while the others held the Gap, Sael fought its quietest battle. If every future could be read, every future could be unnamed in advance. So Sael took part of what had not yet happened and hid it. Most fragments place the hiding in a deep, clear well at the foot of the great World-Ash, where golden threads of unchosen paths were wound into the water and a seam of light was drawn across the sky to cover them. Some think that seam was the first form of the Aurora Veil. Others think it is the wound the hiding left.

The Skeldr say three wise women sit by a well beneath the tree and carve the fate of every life. Those who follow Sael's trail suspect the well holds the opposite: whatever fate has not yet closed.

Seiðr, dream-roads and the riddles around Odin and Freyja all brush against Sael's inheritance. Sael's signs: a road seen only in rain, a door with two shadows, footprints that begin ahead of the traveler.
