Varka, the Name-Eater

The Veyndra power of ending and silence, whose mercy became a hunger to unmake all things. Its fate remains unknown.

Varka is the Veyndra power of ending, silence, absence and unmaking. In the beginning Varka was a needed voice in the Making Choir: empty space let the stars stand apart, endings let new forms arise, and silence let any sound be heard at all. In the oldest images Varka is as plainly kin to the others as any of them, pale, quiet and spare, robed in colors that swallow detail.

Mercy made absolute

Then Varka watched the first living things suffer, and concluded that creation itself was an act of violence. Instead of accepting endings within life, Varka sought an end to existence. The fragments are clear that the horror lies not in cruelty but in mercy carried to its limit: if nothing exists, nothing can grieve. One forbidden fragment keeps what it calls the first argument ever made against creation:

"Everything we sing will be lost. Every one we name will grieve. I am not killing them. I am sparing them the wound of having been."

So Varka began to eat true names. Those Varka touched did not die. They lost the distinction that let them be remembered: a vessel no one could describe, a shoal of fish no one could count, a star that went out so completely that no one could say whether it had ever been lit. After the first unmakings, Varka's shadow began to vanish, leaving not darkness but an absence where it should touch the floor.

Against the four

Each of the others opposed Varka for a different reason. Auvra, once Varka's closest companion of the mind, defended continuity. Kharun saw in Varka's stillness the final enemy of life. Moryn hated the erasure of beings and of the labor that made them. Sael rejected nonexistence because it does not free choice, it abolishes it. Their quarrel became the War of the First Dawn.

Where Varka is now

The war drove Varka outside the ordered harmony, but no fragment claims Varka was destroyed. Some say beyond the Aurora Veil, some below the deepest root of the World-Ash, some in the silence between the stars. Varka's name was never spoken in the sentence that made the First Dawn, and some wonder whether that is why the Dawn could not end Varka.

Varka has no lasting cult. Yet now and then grieving people find a fragment and mistake erasure for compassion. Varka's signs: a missing star that everyone remembers seeing, a mouth without a face, a sentence losing its subject.
